Ants are incredibly hard to get rid of!
We think more in terms of ‘control’ than eradication.
It often takes more than one visit to completely control ants and it can take some time to get results.Ant Control Christchurch New Zealand
The goal is to find the nest and destroy the Queen.
To solve an ant problem, you need to first eliminate the ones you don’t see in order to get rid of the nuisance ones you do see.
The ants that you see are worker ants. Their job is to find food and take it back to feed the queen and her young. Because of this, they are your ticket into the colony.
The Queen is responsible for breeding, but since she never leaves the nest, you have to use the workers to deliver the treatment to stop the reproduction cycle.
Often the mistake made is to spray worker ants with fly spray; this is not recommended as it only disperses them and they try to find new ‘untreated’ areas to move to.
If you spray and kill these ants, the colony will simply send out more workers to take their place.
There are three parts to an Ant treatment that Elite Pest Control uses.
All of which depends entirely on the site and where the ant colony(s) are found.
1 – Residual Spray
It is applied to the foundations and pathways within three meters of the building.
This helps stop ant invasions, however, this Treatment only kills on contact so the ants have to walk over it before it takes a lethal dose.
This kills only the worker ants, not the colony(s).
2 – Baiting
These are placed in areas that have or could have activity both inside and out.
The baits are slow working and it can take up to seven to fourteen days to see results.
The reason for this is, it allows the ants to pick up the bait and take it back to the nest.
We place Bait Stations with our Liquid Bait, this bait is designed for the ants to swarm to. Once they eat the bait they will eventually die.
The Gel bait needs to be slightly heated (like a baby’s bottle), with hot water for a few minutes, do not put into the microwave.
3 – Slow Release Residual Granule
This eliminates ant colonies on site. This treatment is watered into the ground by rainfall.
The Granule treatment is used for the outside areas. It’s like fine sand, and is sprinkled around on cobblestones, gardens and lawns.
The Treatment will be slowly released into the underlying subterranean material, killing ants on and below the surface; forming a ‘curtain’ barrier which will prevent ants from moving over or through the soil.
Ants are very clean and when an ant dies they clean it up, this helps wipe out the entire nest.
Summary
We have had marvellous success by incorporating all three stages into our Ant Control Program.
With Ant pest control be, patient.
The ants will carry the insecticide bait back to the nest, but it can take several days to eliminate the colony, or even a few weeks if the colony is very large.
You may even need to refill the bait station if they are empty of liquid bait.
We advise our customers to give the treatment at least fortnight for the treatment to begin to work.
If you find you see no reduction in activity after this time, and you have replenished the bait yourself (with the gel bait the technician left with you), please give us a call.
Keep it clean to stop attracting Ants.
Sanitation is critical for the prevention and control of any pest.
Like all living creatures, ants need water, food, and shelter for survival. Ants will leave the shelter of their colony to seek food and water.
Don’t make it easy for them! Keep foods sealed, floors swept, and all surfaces clean.
Keep ants out
Ants are tiny creatures and can enter homes and buildings through minute cracks and crevices.
To minimize this, seal around windows and doors, and all cable, pipe, and wire entry points.
Sometimes a monthly program will need to be in place for upwards of three to six months.
Our experienced pest control officers also provide effective mice and rat control, borer treatment, spider removal, and rabbit removal in Christchurch and throughout the Canterbury region.

ANTS
We concentrate on control rather than eradication and target the nests and destroy the queens to
get the desired results
Ants are incredibly frustrating to deal with and it is not possible to eliminate them completely. They
are also not easy to get under control.
Once under control, it’s very important to maintain control and complete exterior annual
maintenance treatments, to keep the numbers low.
We have a standard charge for an Initial Ant Treatment. The price allows for follow up
visits to be conducted for 12 weeks after this first treatment is carried out and we advise giving this initial treatment seven to ten days to start achieving results.
Follow up visits are arranged with Dawn after a brief conversation with the householder about the levels of activity.
After this 12 week
period call-outs will be charged out.
We recommend committing to a monthly service for a minimum of six
months (especially for ants) which allows us to get expected results and to maintain control over the
summer. There is a setup fee for the first month.
This programme doesn’t mean you will never see another ant ever again. It also creates the opportunity to educate our customers on how to effectively control ants when they come around each season, and they will.
Annual maintenance programmes for ant control are available and essentially knock down ant numbers around the immediate vicinity of the property.
Granules that are placed into the grass and garden areas of the property
form a ‘curtain barrier’ which discourages ants from moving over or through the soil.
An initial result will include, swarming of ants around baits, a reduction of swarming ants after 72
hours, no ants appearing after five to seven days, ants reappearing but in reduced numbers.
Canterbury’s most common ant species like to nest in the roof void and wall void areas of the
property so baiting is the only solution available and requires patience and consistency.
Our method and pricing structure of Ant Pest Management means we can meet and exceed
expectations and also teach people how to control ants for themselves when the time comes.
